Thursday Thoughts- Does your day run you?

Phew- it's been a while since I wrote my post on ABA Therapy (Applied Behavioral Therapy) and how it's working in our home.  We still continue to work with Dr. Salek to fine tune our behaviors and find more of a semblance of normal.  We've been working with her for about 6 months now, and if you had told me that in 6 months my life would be this different from what it was, I would have called her so much sooner.  So, if you're in the Houston area and you're struggling with very difficult behaviors in your home from one or more of your children that are related to autism, adoption, bipolar, anxiety etc, and you feel like your child is holding you hostage, please call her.  I am here to tell you it is worth every penny and every moment.  Do not wait, because 6 months from now you will wish you had called today!  (FYI I do not get any compensation from her, I just wholeheartedly believe in her).

So, one of the things that she implemented, was a schedule.  We set up schedules for the kids to help regulate what they do during the day, how much time is spent on media (TV, Tablet, Computer etc) and how much time they have free to do as they wish.  We also put into the schedule morning, afternoon, and evening chores.  If I'm being completely honest, I'll tell you the afternoon chores just don't happen consistently, so I'm working those back out of our schedule, which is an important point about the schedule- you are not locked in!  The schedule can, and will change.  But, the morning and evening chores do and that has helped all of us tremendously.  It helps the kids know that they have value, because they have purpose in our home. It helps me not feel quite as overwhelmed because I'm not the only one responsible for the chores.  It also gives me an opportunity to sit down and relax for a moment.  For example, after dinner the kids do the after dinner chores, and I usually sit in my bed, or on the couch and play a game or two on my tablet during this down time.  It's nice to have some down time when the kids are still awake.

In the beginning there was a schedule for William.  Then we decided that all of the kids should have one, so that William didn't feel singled out, and truly, they all could use one anyway if for no other reason to regulate the media time.  (Does anyone else struggle with feeling like media takes over their household)...  Once we got them all rolling in schedules of their own I decided that writing a new schedule each day was way too much for us.  I could see the value in it, and I could really see how knowing what the day held helped William with his anxiety and consequently his mood, but I could also see that I was about to go under the waters of overwhelm real fast.   So, I went to pinterest looking for templates or something to make this ABA Schedule easier.  What I found, were references to Managers of Their Homes, a program by Terri Maxwell, that I had heard about in the past, but never actually tried.  I decided that I needed to give it a try and see if it helped us.  I will tell you the program, along with their software, ScheduleBreeze has really helped us tremendously.

There were many things I learned as we implemented the schedule.  One of them was that I didn't have any space for me.  Not only did I need that space, but the kids need to know that I have space for me because I'm modeling for them how they should organize their day.  Do I want their days full of doing more and more and more, with no time to just be?  So, now we all have schedules, and it helps me to keep myself in line as well.

Colossians 4:5 says, “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time.”  Over the next little while we'll spend some time talking about what the best use of time is.  I will give you a teaser- it's not busyness, or even productivity.

Stay tuned for more on how I'm getting my life together :)

Love, Semalee

Then Sings My Soul- Book Review

Recently, I received the book, Then Sings My Soul Book 3: The Story of Our Songs: Drawing Strength from the Great Hymns of Our Faith (Then Sings My Soul (Thomas Nelson)).  I was excited to get the book in the first place, because, as you know, I love the music of the church.  However, when I received the book and opened it up, I was met with something that I wasn’t expecting at all.  This book is amazingly rich in the format of diverse music types, from traditional to contemporary, and the history of such.  It is set up as sort of a “history tour” of music in the church, starting back in David’s time and bringing us through the ages to the present.  I found some hymns in this book that I have loved in the contemporary setting, and had no idea they dated back so far.  I found myself engulfed in the richness of the music of the church, and my love for it has been deepened significantly.

The description of the book from the publisher is this:

The long-awaited third installment! In 2003, Robert Morgan released what would become a future classic for over a million readers, a unique book entitled Then Sings My Soul. This collection of the world’s greatest hymns and the stories behind them stirred an entire generation to better understand the heritage of our faith through song.

Now, in the long-awaited third volume of this series, Morgan expands his material to include the great history of worship, the first biblical hymns, biographical sketches of the most interesting composers, and almost 60 generations of hymn singing. The new book also includes a collection of the greatest hymns you’ve never heard, with lead-sheets included.

All of this is in addition to even more standard hymns and the stories of the composers behind them.

Morgan’s conclusion guides the reader into enjoying all of God’s music, blending the old and the new into a symphony of praise that keeps the worship alive for a new generation.

My review of this book is that it completely satisfies the description of the book, and then some.  I really can’t say enough about how much I love this book.  It is my first experience with the "Then Sings My Soul" Series, and I will definitely be purchasing the other two.

GratiTuesday- Stained Glass Hearts, A Book Review

Don’t you just love when you pick up a book and can’t put it down?  Or when you can literally hear the author’s voice as you read along?  It really doesn’t happen that often for me, but it sure did when I read Stained Glass Hearts, by Pasty Clairmont.Patsy was the key note speaker at Women of Faith when I attended in October.  I absolutely loved listening to her talk!  She has a wit about her that I can really relate to, and I want to be just like her when I grow up Smile.  She’s been through some stuff- haven’t we all?- and she is using it to glorify God and bring others closer to Him.

From the first page of this book I was hooked.  It is hilariously funny, brutally honest, heart-wrenchingly raw, and just what the doctor ordered.  She moves through different pieces of life, and relates to them each as broken pieces, that when put together, become a beautiful patchwork of stained glass.  She encourages us to take the brokenness of our lives and see the beauty in it that God sees.  She reminisces about her own brokenness and how it consumed her at one time.

Not a chapter went by that I couldn’t relate to.  Each one brought a new piece of my own broken life to the light so that I could inspect it, and shape in a new way.

At the end of each chapter she has the “Art Gallery” where she gives you other places to look to deepen the message of that particular chapter.  These stretched me to find new appreciation for things I hadn’t taken the time to look at before.

I can not recommend this book enough.  It is a must have for every woman if you ask me.  I rarely rarely read a book more than once, but this will be one I will do so with.  I only got the E-book, so now I feel the need to buy the hard cover too, to lay by my bedside for when I need a minute to regroup.

Take a look around her website- I think you’ll fall in love with her as I did Smile

I hope you’ll consider this for your reading in 2012.

Book Review- Merry Christmas Stories

image

Recently I was given the opportunity to review the book, Merry Christmas Stories, by Jeff Spalsbury.  I was very excited to start reading this book, because Christmas is one of my favorite times.  Probably my favorite thing about the book is that it has 25 stories, perfect to read with your sweetheart every night in December.  The book has a wide collection, including love stories, ghost stories, science fiction and more.

The first story in the book is “Santa’s Missing”.  I really enjoyed this story, even though I found a lot of it to be predictable, and somewhat unrealistic.  The idea behind the story was nice.  This was my favorite story in the book.

Excerpt of Santa’s Missing

As I continued reading, my first problem was that I had to read more than one story a day, because I had a deadline for this review.  I think I would have enjoyed the stories more if they were spread out.  Reading them so close together made it obvious to me that the majority of the stories had the same underlying theme- someone is lonely, or depressed on Christmas, they find love and everything is good.  Honestly, after a while it bored me.  However, a lot of people really enjoy the feel good love story type, so I can definitely see where people would enjoy this book….. just don’t read it all at once Winking smile

I also felt that my teen agers might like it, although the emphasis on having to have love to be happy is a little heavy.  I’d have to talk with them before letting them read it to get clear the source of real love- God.

All in all, it’s a good book to have to pull out at Christmas time, maybe leave it by the toilet to read, or on the coffee table- but please don’t move it back and forth!  LOL Smile

Jeff R. Spalsbury also writes science fiction and western novels. Avalon Press published his western novel, Hunt the Hunter, in December 2010 and the second novel in his Hunt series, The Hunted Return is scheduled to be published in July 2012, also by Avalon.  His science fiction novel, SPACE DREAM ONE: That Other’s May Live will be published as an eBook in October 2011.

Spalsbury taught a class on the importance of using humor in the classroom at California State University in Fresno. He is also a former library director and professor at Porterville College, Porterville, CA.

GratiTuesday, Book Review and a Giveaway!

Recently I was given a copy of Max Lucado’s new book, God's Story, Your Story: When His Becomes Yoursto review on my blog.  I was so excited at the opportunity to review this book, because I really, really enjoy Max Lucado Smile

At first glance of the book, I was not disappointed at all.  As I expected, the book is very easy to read, and grabs you in right away.  The book is a collection of stories of things that have happened to people, and how those stories intertwine with God’s Story.  The purpose of the book is to help you, as the reader to be able to relate the seemingly insignificant things, or maybe even the tragedies of your life into the “Bigger Picture”.

Reading this book has really changed the way I’m looking at life.  And isn’t that what we’re supposed to be doing in the first place?  As Christian’s, we are called to keep our eyes not on earthly things, but on the things of heaven.  We’re called to focus on our inheritance, especially in times of trouble.  And, for me, this has helped me so much during trials in my life.  God has a story for all of us.  He has the ultimate story, we are all a part of a great story, a novel of history.  And our life, is just a page, a chapter, a lesson in the great story of time.  When we’re able to take our eyes off this small piece and see it for what it is, it gives our lives purpose.

There are days when it seems like nothing I do matters.  Nothing significant happens in my day, it’s just the normal hum drum of laundry and dishes.  Most days, I’m very grateful for these sorts of days, because there isn’t a crisis Smile  But, sometimes I wonder- am I doing anything significant in this world?  Yes, the answer is yes.  The story of my life intertwines with God’s Story in ways I never really considered.  And why haven’t we considered them?  Do we really think the people of the Bible, especially those in the smaller stories of the Old Testament thought their lives would have eternal significance?  Probably not.  Yet they do.  Their lives mirror ours in different ways at different times.  Seeing the fulfillment of God’s plan in their lives helps us to believe there is fulfillment in our own.  It gives us hope.  And, that is what the purpose of this book is as well.

I hope reading my review has encouraged you to go buy the book.  I am very grateful for the opportunity to have read it.

And…….  The kind people at Zondervan have provided a copy for me to give away to one of my readers!  Here’s what you need to do to be entered in the drawing:

Family Time Friday- Love You More- a Book Review

I was recently sent a copy of the book, Love You More: The Divine Surprise of Adopting My Daughter by Thomas Nelson PublishingLove You More is a book written by an adoptive mother about her journey to adopting her daughter from Guatemala.  In the book she chronicles the events that happened leading up to the adoption including the way God lead her and her husband to the choice of adoption.  As an adoptive mother myself I was very interested in reading this book.  As I read the book, however I began to feel like people who haven’t considered adoption should read this book as well, because she really puts into words the way an adoptive mother feels about their adoptive child.

As I read it I loved the way she described that she felt like her daughter was always meant to be with her family, because that is exactly how we felt about Shea and later William.  I had no idea it could feel that way, but looking back I can clearly see the steps God put in our lives that lead us to adopting our specific children, and I can clearly see that they were meant to be with us.  Even as we went through the craziness of the CPS system He was the one in control of the chaos, making sure that everything happened at precisely the right time in spite of our attempts to rush things.  Smile

In the book Love You More, Jennifer Grant talks about how frustrating the whole process was, and how it was awful waiting for the government to decide that her family was, in fact, a family.  In some ways, adopting through the foster system is easier in that we get to experience the firsts with our child, but in way it’s more difficult because if something goes wrong we have had the child and then have to say good-bye.  In a sense we risk our hearts in a different way.

At the end she talks about how it with her daughter now, about 10 years after the fact, and how her family has been shaped through the experience.  I really enjoyed reading about the later experiences as I can not wait to get there myself.

In short, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who wonders about adoption, is considering adoption, or knows anyone who has adopted Smile

Book Review- Max on Life

I recently received a copy of the book “Max on Life” by Max Lucado.  This book takes many of the questions that he has been asked throughout his career and answers them in a frank manner.  Each question has it’s own chapter and the chapters are relatively short.  I like this.  This a book that you don’t read in one sitting, rather, it’s meant to be enjoyed over a period of time I think.  I think this is a good book to take a chapter a day and digest.  It would even be a good book to discuss at the dinner table with the family, especially if you have older children who will understand the concepts.  Some of the concepts would be too much for younger children.

The book is separated into 7 sections:  Hope, Hurt, Help, Him/Her, Home, Haves and Have-Nots, and Hereafter.  You can jump to a particular section if you have certain questions, or read a chapter a day Smile

All in all I’ve really enjoyed this book.  I can almost hear Mr. Lucado speaking as I read the chapters.  I enjoy the frankness and candidness of the writing.  And, it gives you some things to think about.

I would recommend this book for personal use, and for gifts.  It might make it on to my Christmas List this year Winking smile

I received this book from the booksneeze program in exchange for my honest review.  I was not paid for a positive review and this review is my honest opinion.

Book Review-The Faith of Ronald Reagan

I recently received a copy of “The Faith of Ronald Reagan”.  I was very excited to read this book, because Reagan is someone who I find very fascinating.  The book goes through different points in the President’s life and recalls parts that impacted his life, through his faith.  It is based on personal accounts either through Regan’s writings or close friends’ recollections.

While I did find the book very interesting, the writing style was not my favorite.  I could tell the writer had a deep affection for the President, but it came across as more of an admiration as a child admires their elders.  I learned a lot of interesting facts about the president, and was very encouraged by the recounts of the assassination attempt, and how Reagan’s faith sustained him.

I would recommend this book, because it is full of interesting facts, but the reader needs to be aware of the writing style.  It is more of a conversational style than informative.

Family Time Friday- Book Review- Sabbath

image

It’s the season of Lent, and what better time to reflect on our true Sabbath time than this?  I’ve been reading a book recently called  Sabbath, Finding Renewal and Delight in our Busy Lives, by Wayne Muller.  It is an amazing book.  He begins the book by talking with us about our lack of rest in our busy society today.  He implores us to consider that the purpose of Sabbath is rest.  And when we go to church and continue on with our busy days we don’t often actually come to a true state of rest.  We may slow down just a bit, or if you’re like me and you’re getting 4 children off to church and volunteering etc church isn’t really about rest.  It is about worship and that is very important, but it isn’t the rest that God calls us to have.  It isn’t quiet conversation with God.  It isn’t often quiet at all.  Sabbath time and a call to observe the Sabbath is mentioned numerous times in the Bible, leading us to believe it is of great importance to our God.

Sabbath: Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in Our Busy Lives

In this book he gives many different Sabbath practices and ideas to practice your own Sabbath time with God.

I highly recommend this book, and I have committed to practicing Sabbath time at least once a week during Lent, in addition to my regular worship time at church.  I hope you will consider the same Smile

Family Time Friday- Booking it in 2011

Happy New Years~!!!!  Here's to a great 2011!!

I think I have a problem.  I'm addicted to blogs.  There.  I've admitted it.  :)  I've not done real good with reading books.  Better over the years for sure, and I have practically my own library, because I really like to buy books LOL  ;)  Well, I have found something that I think will help and thought I'd share it with you, in case you have the same problem I do.

I have a friend who she and her kids read every day from like 1-2 or something like that.  She said she had so many books that she wanted to read and never got to them, so they set a time and they do it every day.  I'm not sure how feasible this is for me right now with the babies and all, but I do think it's a great idea!

I never liked reading as a child.  I didn't like to slow down long enough to find the adventure in the book.  As I've gotten older I've begun to crave the slow down :)  But, both of my older boys LOVE to read, and I want to continue to encourage that, so I think I'm going to have them make their own reading list for 2011 as well.  Maybe I'll share it with you to help you if you'd like some things for your kids to read.  I'll try to remember LOL.

Anyway, one of the blogs I read did a program last year (I didn't get in on it, because I just started reading this blog), and she's doing it again this year.  She's calling it Booking it in 2011.  She's choosing 11 books to read in 2011.  I think I'm going to give it a go! I think the accountability of a schedule will get me reading :)

With a hat that size, you will have no trouble

A Book Review- Heaven is for Real

 http://www.booksneeze.com/art/_240_360_Book.273.cover.jpg

Heaven is for Real is a book that recalls stories of 4 year old Colton who experiences heaven while sick. This book was not really what I was expecting, but I'm not really sure what I was expecting. As I began to read the book I was immediately drawn into the story. I found myself in tears at a couple of places as the writer told the story. I'm sure this book may not appeal to everyone, but for me it was just what I needed when I needed it. It offers hope to those who have lost loved ones. It is confirmation and encouragement for those who wonder about what happens when we die. It's confirmation of God's amazing and redeeming love.

It is a very conversational book, so if that isn't a style you enjoy be aware. I typically like this style of writing, so I felt comfortable reading it. It's a fairly short book, easy to read in a few days, which was another thing I liked. I could see myself giving this book as a gift to someone who has lost a loved one.

Family Time Friday- Devotions

Recently my husband and I started going to Sunday School. We haven't gone in the past because it's a long day for the babies in the nursery, but they're getting a little older now, so we decided we'd see if they could handle it. Well, our Sunday School Class is studying a book that I just had to share with y'all!

Let me tell you, this book is amazing.  It's a devotion book that really takes you through the traditions of the church year all the way down to the colors of the church, the feasts etc.  It then has a devotional reading for every day of advent.  I've read many an Advent devotional before, and I'm sure you have too, but this one is unlike the others I've read.  The book itself is beautiful with beautiful pictures inside.  Each reading has a couple of scripture reading and then a devotional and then a prayer.  It is just very beautifully written.

"God is that greater than which cannot be thought.  God is literally inconceivable.  And that is why God was conceived as a human being in the womb of the Virgin Mary.  Because we cannot, even in thought, rise up to God, God stooped down to us in Jesus, who is 'Emmanuel', which means 'God with Us'".

Good, huh?  And that's just the first Sunday!  I believe this will be a new tradition in my house to read every year.  I can't recommend this book enough.

Out Live Your Life- a Book Review

I recently received a copy of Out Live Your Life By Max Lucado in the mail from the publisher. I am a long time fan of Max Lucado, and I was very excited to receive this book. I was never disappointed.  The book is a collection of short stories, so to speak about people and actions that have changed the world.  It is a collection of stories put together to help you see the bigger picture in life.  We go about life often in a daze, only consumed with the troubles of our own lives and our own days with nary a thought towards others.  From front to back it is an engaging book.  I found my self feeling the need to share bits and pieces of it all the time with the people around me, and couldn't wait to read more.  It also comes with a study guide in the back, and would be a fantastic book to study in a small group setting, or in a church setting.  I believe this book is so versatile that it would also work well for a church wide study.  All in all, I would definitely recommend this book, and I will probably read it several times.

2 Book Reviews

I recently received a copy of the Butterfly Effect, by Andy Andrews to review.  It was a very short book, filled with a couple of interesting stories.  The basis of the book is the idea that everything we do has an effect on many, sometimes thousands, sometimes millions, even billions of people.  I've heard this concept before in the form of the "Ripple Effect", though it is a little different.  Even though the book was only 58 pages, I found it difficult to stay engaged with the book.  The initial story was centered around a battle during the civil war, and it really seemed to drag on and on.  Then he went on to tell of the invention of a form of crop that thrives better, and how it came about, and all the people that were ultimately involved.  This was a bit more interesting than the first story, and I eventually saw the point the author was making, but still found it hard to remain interested.  All in all I would not say this book was "life changing" or anything like that, but does contain some interesting concepts.

I also recieved The Boy Who Changed the World, by Andy Andres.  This is the children's version of The Butterfly Effect.  I liked this one more than The Butterfly Effect.  It basically told the story of the corn without all of the other stories in the other book.  It is written for children, and I'd say it probably isn't appropriate for very very young children, but a good book for early elementary age kids.  The message is much more clear in this book, in my opinion.  The book goes through the people and how they touched each others' lives and how that affected the future.  The illustrations in this book are also very good.  I think I would consider buying this book as a gift for a child in my life.
