One of the yummy things I like to eat whenever we go to my Mother In Law’s house is Pea Salad.  I had never had it before I married my husband.  But I DO love peas!  Winking smile  Hope you’ll like it too!

Singing Saturday- Blessings

Let me just tell you, if you haven’t heard this song yet, stop what you’re doing and listen.  It’s really incredible.

Blessings by Laura Story

We pray for blessings
We pray for peace
Comfort for family
Protection while we sleep

We pray for healing
For prosperity
We pray for Your mighty hand
to ease our suffering

And all the while
You hear each spoken need
Yet love is way too much to give us lesser things

Cuz what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know you’re near
What if trials of this life
Are Your mercies in disguise?

We pray for wisdom
Your voice to hear
We cry in anger when we cannot feel You near
We doubt Your goodness
We doubt Your love
As if every promise from Your Word is not enough

And all the while You hear each desperate plea
Lord, that we’d have faith to believe

Cuz what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know you’re near
What if trials of this life
Are Your mercies in disguise?

When friends betray us
When darkness seems to win
We know the pain reminds this heart
That this is not
This is not our home

Cuz what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know you’re near
What if trials of this life
Are Your mercies in disguise?

What if my greatest disappointments
Or the aching of this life
is the revealing of a greater thirst
This world can’t satisfy?
And what if trials of this life
The rain
The storms
The hardest nights
are your mercies in disguise

Family Time Friday- Book Review- Sabbath

image

It’s the season of Lent, and what better time to reflect on our true Sabbath time than this?  I’ve been reading a book recently called  Sabbath, Finding Renewal and Delight in our Busy Lives, by Wayne Muller.  It is an amazing book.  He begins the book by talking with us about our lack of rest in our busy society today.  He implores us to consider that the purpose of Sabbath is rest.  And when we go to church and continue on with our busy days we don’t often actually come to a true state of rest.  We may slow down just a bit, or if you’re like me and you’re getting 4 children off to church and volunteering etc church isn’t really about rest.  It is about worship and that is very important, but it isn’t the rest that God calls us to have.  It isn’t quiet conversation with God.  It isn’t often quiet at all.  Sabbath time and a call to observe the Sabbath is mentioned numerous times in the Bible, leading us to believe it is of great importance to our God.

Sabbath: Finding Rest, Renewal, and Delight in Our Busy Lives

In this book he gives many different Sabbath practices and ideas to practice your own Sabbath time with God.

I highly recommend this book, and I have committed to practicing Sabbath time at least once a week during Lent, in addition to my regular worship time at church.  I hope you will consider the same Smile

Ah March.  That time of year when you are starting to see the buds of summer.  The temperatures are rising, and if you’re in the southern part of the US you’ve probably even put your sweaters away and got all of your flip flops out with glee!  I know I have.  And now I see I need to get in for a pedicure- fast!  Winking smile  This week in my area we’re going to be on Spring Break.  I homeschool, so Spring Break is not as big of a deal for me (my kids will still have schoolwork next week probably), but it does lend to a bit more laid back for us too- because the activities we’re in are not meeting, like scouts, Enrichment, Bible Study, Youth Group etc…  So, I’m looking forward to the break Winking smile

That’s not to say we’re not going to be busy around here.  This coming week!

This week’s tasks for the Spring Cleaning Challenge are:

The GARAGE!  I hope your garage is not as bad as mine usually is.  But while the kids are out and the weather is nice is a perfect time to clean it out.  If you don’t have a messy garage, you could choose another place like the storage shed, or just do a real big spring clean of your yard.  All of these things are happening at my house this week Winking smile  Let’s get ready for summer!!!!

Have a great week!

It’s a GratiTuesday post, but it isn’t pretty OR rosy…

image

I had some things happen this week that brought up some pain.  Pain that I had stuffed down deep in an effort to survive.  Pain I didn’t think anyone could bring up except my mother, but I was wrong.

I’ve posted a couple of times about my broken relationship with my mother.  I’ve not really posted the depth of pain it causes, though.

I haven’t posted that my mother is an alcoholic.

I haven’t posted that even though I know she will hurt me over and over I keep going back like a dog to it’s vomit.

I haven’t posted that every day I pray for her, think of her, and miss her.

I haven’t posted that my kids are hurt by her actions, or  non-actions.

I haven’t posted that she' hasn’t sent anything except cruel letters to me for going on 10 years now.

I have wondered how much I could take.

I have wondered when I would break.

I know now.

I’m broken.

Deeply broken.

I’m not sure how or if I’ll ever recover emotionally.

I doubt everything.

I doubt people.

I doubt myself.

I cry.

And cry.

And cry.

If you have an alcoholic in your life maybe you can relate.  Maybe you know the pain they can cause.  Maybe you too have a messed up relationship with your mother.  Maybe you too have deep insecurity because of it.

I’ve prayed to God to make this better.

I’ve tried to be good enough for her to love me.

I’ve tried to tell her and show her in any way possible that I love her, hoping that it would at some point tug at her heart and make her love me back.

Maybe if I did this she’d love me.

Maybe if I do this she won’t hate me.

Why does she hate me?

Maybe I’m unlovable.

Maybe I’m not worthy.

Maybe everyone really is going to eventually leave me.

Maybe there’s something so deeply wrong with me that I deserve this.

All I’ve ever wanted was to love God, and people.

These are my true feelings.  They’re not pretty.  They’re not wrapped up in neat little packages.  I’m sorry if I’ve deluded you into thinking I have it all together, because I don’t.

I fail.

All the time.

I have 4 children relying on my not to fail.

I love them more than anything in this world, and I’m so scared that someday I’ll go crazy like my mom has and hurt them too.

I can’t let that happen.

I have a husband who is truly amazing.  I mean really.  I watch him from a distance because I know I don’t deserve him.

I don’t know how I got my husband.  And sometimes I push him away by holding on too tight.

I know he’s amazing, and I know he deserves better.

There it is.  That’s my dark place.  That’s where the devil hangs out in my mind and torments me.  These are the things he uses to do so.

Maybe you have a dark place like this.

I’ve heard it said that sometimes you have to find the dark to find the light.

I know that to be true.

I’m in the dark place now, but I’m looking for the light.

I’m looking for God.

I know I’ll find Him, and I’ll come back into the light.

Are you in a dark place?  Are you looking for God?

Don’t give up.  Don’t let go.  Don’t let the devil win.

Alcohol is the devil’s tool to destroying families.  I’m not saying you should NEVER drink, although that is probably the best choice for some, but I am saying it is a tool the devil uses.

Just like our negative thoughts.

Letting the devil use our negative thoughts to destroy us in not really that much different from letting him use alcohol to destroy us.

The destruction is the same, just a different tool.

As for me, I have to understand that my mother is dead to the alcohol.  And I have to accept that and make her dead to me.  I have to separate her actions from my self worth.

God will heal me here, just as He has in the past.

It’s going to take some time, and I might not be blogging much.  I’m thankful I have the season of Lent to reflect on God instead of the world.

Menu Monday- 3/7

image

This week on WW I learned that I can easily spiral downward Sad smile….  But, even still I did have some victories when I chose salads instead of other foods and even refused ice cream a couple of times.  I’m learning and reminding myself that I can have anything I want, just not all on the same day.  It seems to be working so far Winking smile.  I didn’t weigh in last week either, because my life got a little out of control, so I don’t have a February total for you- I’ll have it for you next week.  As the weather improves, I’m looking forward to spending more time outside working in the yard, which I’m sure will help my weight loss Winking smile.  On a happy note, I did fit into a pair of shorts comfortably this week that at the end of shorts season last year were a bit tight Open-mouthed smileOpen-mouthed smileOpen-mouthed smileOpen-mouthed smileOpen-mouthed smileOpen-mouthed smileOpen-mouthed smile…  I’m eager for those shorts to be too big!

Ok, so here’s what’s on the menu this week:

Monday:  Burgers and fries

Tuesday:  Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper at Church

Wednesday:  Chicken Tortilla Soup

Thursday:  BBQ Chicken and Brussel Sprouts

Friday:  Baked Tilapia, Pea Salad

Saturday:  Tacos

Sunday:  Snack Dinner

Supper Sunday- Mock Ice Cream Sandwiches

image

Mock Ice Cream Sandwiches
WW Points + =2 points per sandwich

Ingredients:
1 Chocolate Graham Cracker (4 small rectangles)
4 TBS Cool Whip Free

Directions:
Break the cracker in half forming 2 squares.  Spread Cool Whip over one half and top with other half.  Place in freezer for at least 2 hours before eating.

This recipe is an old WW recipe and very good.  Cool Whip isn’t the healthiest thing on the planet, however, so I’d limit how much you eat, and/or substitute the cool whip with real whipped cream, but that will raise the points back up….  But, it’s a good snack in a pinch!

Singing Saturday- The Stuff

This is a great song, Francesca Battistelli is great at singing about real life “stuff” Winking smile

The Stuff- By Francesca Battistelli

I lost my keys in the great unknown
And call me please 'Cuz I can't find my phone

This is the stuff that drives me crazy
This is the stuff that's getting to me lately
In the middle of my little mess
I forget how big I'm blessed
This is the stuff that gets under my skin
But I gotta trust You know exactly what You're doing
It might not be what I would choose
But this is the stuff You use

45 in a 35
Sirens and fines while I'm running behind
Whoa

This is the stuff that drives me crazy
This is the stuff that's getting to me lately
In the middle of my little mess
I forget how big I'm blessed
This is the stuff that gets under my skin
But I gotta trust You know exactly what You're doing
It might not be what I would choose
But this is the stuff You use

So break me of impatience
Conquer my frustrations
I've got a new appreciation
It's not the end of the world
Oh Oh Oh

This is the stuff that drives me crazy
This is the stuff
Someone save me
In the middle of my little mess
I forget how big I'm blessed
This is the stuff that gets under my skin
And I've gotta trust You know exactly what You're doing
It might not be what I would choose
But this is the stuff You use
Oh Oh Oh Oh
This is the stuff You use

Family Time Friday- Lent

image

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday.  If you’re not familiar with what Ash Wednesday is, Wikipedia has a great explanation.  Basically, though, it is the beginning of Lent, falling 46 days before Easter.  Lent lasts for 40 days, and does not include the Sundays because they are mini resurrection celebrations.  In liturgical churches it is common for Christians to fast during Lent.  What most people don’t realize is that a fast can be living without something, or it can be adding something in.  The purpose of the 40 days of Lent is to spend time slowing down, in a sort of 40 day long Sabbath, focusing more on God and less on the “stuff” of the world.  By fasting from things we draw our attention back to God.  I have always loved that the church sets aside this time, because usually around when Lent begins my life is beyond busy and I’m really starting to feel the consequences of that.  Let beckons me to slow back down.

Most years we do a family fast in addition to our personal fasts.  We choose something to fast from as a family.  One year we did TV!  That was HARD, but I’m glad we did it.  This year we haven’t fully decided yet (we better hurry!), but we’re talking about facebook or eating out.  I think we’ll probably end up with eating out.   Whatever we do, we’ll do it together to build family unity Winking smile

Personally, I’m not really sure what I want to fast from.  I do want to add it some additional Sabbath practices, and spend more time just being with God.  Our church has an hour of silent prayer on Wednesdays, and that is sort of a Sabbath hour, so I’m thinking I may go to that every week during Lent.  Other than that, I’m not sure for my personal fast.  Maybe you all have some ideas!  I hope so!

You don’t have to belong to a liturgical church to participate in the practice of fasting for Lent.  It really has nothing to do with the church you attend, it’s all about you and God.  So, if you’re not in a liturgical church, I hope you’ll consider fasting for Lent.  I think you’ll learn some things about yourself, and draw closer to God.

If you’re fasting for Lent, I’d love it if you’d leave a comment so we can share with each other what we’re giving up.  I need some ideas!

Alrighty!  It’s March, and around here that means the beginning of our Spring Cleaning Challenge!  We’re going to spend the 5 Thursdays in March doing some Spring Cleaning Smile  So, what that means, is that during these 5 weeks we may have a heavier load, but we will reap the benefits at month’s end.  I hope you’re up for the challenge, and will post pictures on our FaceBook page Winking smile.

We’re going to begin in the main living area of the house.  Below is a suggested list of items that may need to be cleaned out:

Spring Cleaning- Living Room

o Do a quick pick up of the living room to get you started.

o Start top to bottom: take a broom and sweep the ceilings or use a vacuum to vacuum the ceiling. Don’t forget the A/C Register needs to be cleaned.

o Sweep/Dust/Wash the walls. Spot Clean where necessary, and wipe off the light switches and outlets.

o While cleaning the walls clean all of the pictures. Be careful not to spray cleaner on them, rather use a damp cloth so the liquid doesn’t seep behind the glass and damage the pictures.

o If you have a fireplace, clean out all the ashes and clean off the hearth.

o Clean all of the baseboards. (This is a great task for the kids!)

o Clean off any book cases, shelves, curio cabinets, remove all items, thoroughly dust, and replace items.

o Clean off the end tables. Dust thoroughly. Wipe down your lamps, and vacuum the lamp shades.

o Take the cushions out of your couches and chairs and vacuum in the crevices. Spot clean any spots that need to be cleaned.

o Move your furniture, and vacuum underneath. Take a hose and vacuum all along the baseboards and corners.

o Clean the carpets, using a carpet cleaner, or a vacuum out carpet shampoo, or a professional if necessary, paying attention to trouble spots.

o Replace all furniture.

o Enjoy the beauty of a clean room!

I’ve mentioned that I love my church a few times here I think Winking smile  There are  many reasons I love my church.  To me, your church should be like extended family.  It should be a  place that when you go there you feel like you’re at home.  It should be a place that you don’t have to put on your “Sunday Best” for.  What do I mean by that?  You know, when someone asks you how you are and you’re really having the worst day ever and you respond with “I’m great, how are you?”….  Yeah, I think at church you should be able to be real.  We’re all sinners and we all have problems and the point of church is to support one another through Christ, not to act like perfect people and go home and cry.  If you are in a church that you can go to when you’re in trouble and feel loved and accepted, and forgiven, please take some time this week to let your pastor and church staff know.  They work tireless hours and are often unthanked for all they do for us.  If you are in a church where you feel like you have to put on your Sunday Best, you should consider finding a church home, or consider being the change your church needs to become a home to the lost.  You really don’t even know the power of the church until you are home.  And that’s God’s will for us all.  Sometimes God says “move” and sometimes God says “work”.  Spend some time in prayer about what God is saying to you.

Anyway, our church youth had a fundraiser last night.  It was a drive through dinner thing where people drove up and got a BBQ Baked potato and sides.  The youth cooked the potatoes and delivered them to the cars.  I sat in the parking lot for a while waiting for it to be close to time to pick my kids up, just watching our youth in action.  It is sometimes nice to watch your kids (especially the teen agers) from a window and see how they are when they’re just being them.  I was filled with joy watching all of the kids in our youth group.  They are all really, really great kids.  Full of smiles, full of love.  They’re full of energy, and always willing to do for others.  I see it on Sundays when they just help out in children’s church, or clean up, or whatever without anyone even asking them.  It’s true for pretty much all the kids in our youth group.  And, truly, it’s an honor to be a part of their lives, and an honor to be part of the extended family of our church that is raising up these great kids.  So, if you’re a parent of a youth at my church- I’m talking about you, I’m grateful for you today and the impact your child has on my kids Smile
